Auckland Startup Weekend: Advice From the Mothership

By Karl Hardisty

Ready. Set. Stop!

There are a number of factors that drive the individuals behind start ups. As people, we’re all a product of a huge number of influences, which have distilled in all those attending Startup Weekend a desire to create something new. How do you channel this collision of circumstance and choice to create something AMAZING?

1. Daydream.

In a constructive manner, of course. Take the time to let your thoughts flow and imagine the world with your product in it. How will people view it, use it, come to love it, and ultimately not want to live without it? While there’s no substitute for planning and research, take the time to think where your product could go.

2. Network.

Our  world and everything in it is increasingly connected,be it people or objects.  The fruits of your love and toil will be a part of this world. Get out and talk to as many people as you can, at the obvious events and places such as Startup Weekend, but also take the time to seek counsel and conversation outside of your industry and the business community as a whole. Great opportunity and advice come from anywhere and everywhere, and sometimes from the most unexpected avenues.

3. Take a break.

Giving it your all doesn’t mean giving it your all, all of the time. Take time out to retain perspective and enjoy life! Apart from the obvious benefits of sunshine, physical exercise, and spending time with friends and family, it’s hard to miss something if it’s always there. Being away from your work leads to the excitement of looking forward to rejoining the battle. There’s nothing like waking up and not being able to wait to get stuck in.

At Startup Weekend you will be surrounded by people with whom to share ideas, create together and feel the rush of 54 hours of incredible creativity and momentum.

Live it!
