Innovation is a mindset. It is also the fuel for a once-in-a-generation transformation of Auckland into a world leading technology producer.

Auckland already produces 55 per cent of New Zealand’s ICT GDP, and the sector continues to grow rapidly – it’s tipped to be the country’s second largest foreign exchange earner by 2020.

Auckland must become a more innovative technology producer if it is to achieve the growth targets set in the Economic Development Strategy.  Enter the Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct.

The innovation precinct – a partnership between Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Waterfront Auckland – is a purpose-built innovation cluster, designed to position Auckland as an epicentre for high-tech ICT and digital media businesses.

When completed, the precinct will bring together the focus, resources, connections and opportunity to launch high-tech business success on the global stage. It will attract investment, collaboration and skilled migration, and provide budding entrepreneurs the ideal incubator environment to start-up.

Three tips for start-ups

Bring something new to the market. In the frantic early days as a start-up, it is reassuring to know your competitive advantage, so what makes your business unique? Your answer will guide the numerous decisions you’ll make each day.

Know your customer. Take time to research who will best benefit from your business’ offer, build a rich profile including as much detail as possible so you can target your sales.

Know where you want to go. Have a clear, succinct business plan based on the client ‘pain’ you are trying to resolve. This will help you recognise a “pivot point” in your business’ evolution and assess future opportunities.
